How to Use an At-Home Chlamydia STD Test Kit | STI Health Check
Share
Chlamydia is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the United States, particularly among young adults and sexually active individuals. It is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and is transmitted through unprotected oral, vaginal, or anal sex.
Most people with chlamydia experience no symptoms, meaning many spread it unknowingly. Routine screening is the most reliable way to catch an infection early.
An At-Home Chlamydia STD Test Kit from STI Health Check allows you to complete a private, convenient preliminary screening in just 15 minutes without booking a clinic appointment.
Why Screen for Chlamydia?
Early detection is essential. Left untreated, chlamydia can cause serious, long-term health complications, including:
-
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) in women, which can lead to chronic pelvic pain or infertility
-
Epididymitis (testicular inflammation and pain) in men
-
Complications during pregnancy or transmission to newborns during childbirth
Regular screening helps ensure early identification and prompt treatment to protect both you and your sexual partners.

Step-by-Step: How to Use the Chlamydia Test
-
Step 1: Prepare Your Space
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Set up a clean, dry, flat surface and have a timer ready.
-
Step 2: Collect Your Sample
-
For Women: Gently insert the sterile swab into the lower vaginal opening and rotate for several seconds to gather sample cells.
-
For Men: Carefully insert the swab slightly into the tip of the urethra and gently rotate.
-
Note: Avoid letting the swab tip touch any external surfaces or skin after collection to prevent contamination.
-
-
Step 3: Mix the Sample
Insert the swab into the buffer solution tube. Swirl the swab thoroughly in the fluid for 10 to 15 seconds to release the sample antigens, then squeeze the remaining liquid from the swab back into the tube before disposing of the swab.
-
Step 4: Add Sample to the Test Cassette
Using the dropper, place the recommended drops of mixed liquid into the designated sample well (marked "S") on the test cassette. Start your timer for 15 minutes.
-
Step 5: Read Your Results
-
Negative: One line appears at the Control position (C). No chlamydia antigens detected.
-
Positive: Two lines appear at both the Control (C) and Test (T) positions. Chlamydia antigens detected.
-
Invalid: No line appears, or only a line at T appears. The test did not run correctly, and you should retest with a new kit.
-
Read results strictly between 15 and 20 minutes. Do not interpret results after 30 minutes, as background lines may develop.
Understanding Accuracy and Timing
For dependable results, timing matters. The typical window period for chlamydia detection is 7 to 14 days after potential exposure, allowing bacterial antigens time to reach detectable levels.
If you test too early and receive a negative result while experiencing symptoms, retest after the full window period or consult a doctor.
Common Symptoms to Watch For
While over half of chlamydia cases show no signs, some people may experience:
-
Pain or a burning sensation during urination
-
Abnormal vaginal or penile discharge
-
Lower abdominal pain
-
Pain or discomfort during intercourse
What to Do If You Test Positive
If your screening test indicates a positive result:
-
Schedule an appointment with a primary care physician or visit a local STD clinic for confirmatory testing and appropriate antibiotic treatment.
-
Notify recent sexual partners so they can also seek testing and care.
-
Abstain from sexual activity until you and your partner(s) complete treatment.
-
Retest approximately 3 months post-treatment to ensure the infection has cleared and avoid reinfection.
